Saint-Valery-sur-Somme

February 2005 - April 2005

No kayaking pictures, on the contrary. Maybe these pics are the last you 'll ever see of the play spot what used to be the best wave in the North of France and Belgium. But we'll have to wait the end of the works and the coming of rain and water to see the result.

Anyway here are some pictures of the construction of the third gate at the lower sluices in St-Valery-sur-Somme.

The new sluice is one that goes up and down. And will give the river a wider access into the see so more water can flow out during low tide.

February 2005

On the picture the preparation of the works have started by demolition of the road and the rails.

Looking downstream you get a clear sight of where the new gate is coming. The old campsite sure is gone be a bit smaller.

Left is where the tidal wave is when there is more water on the Somme.

March 2005

Before the real construction works start, a temporary bridge is installed, so the train can continue to pass during the works.

Once the bridge is in place, temporary rails are placed on top.

Et voila, testing of the bridge, the first train passing over.

This method is a bit what construction people call 'cover and cut'. First the bridge is placed and the the excavating and construction starts underneath. This way traffic can go on.
